Effective navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation

Project Description
Development of an innovative system for effective transcranial magnetic stimulation, guided by three-dimensional tractographic data extracted from magnetic resonance images of the diffusion tensor, able to perform an accurate and complete brain mapping study, for the purpose of a more accurate neurosurgical planning and of an improved efficacy of therapeutic treatments via n-TMS.
The project aims to create a prototype for navigated TMS through measurement of muscle feedback by electromyography, able to indicate to the operator the actual stimulation induced on the patient. The device is as a cutting-edge product as no device present today is able to establish whether the stimulation via TMS has been effective or not and therefore allows a significant reduction in false negatives. leading to an improvement in the outcomes of neurosurgical patients and patients treated with TMS therapies (TMS is used in therapeutic treatments for depression, parkinson’s, epilepsy, drug and alcohol addictions, ludopathies, Alzheimer’s and other minor pathologies).
The main activities concerned advanced tracing techniques of neuronal fibers and brain anatomical models, innovative algorithms for modeling the diffusion of the induced field, research and development on HW subsystems. The proposed project has a high scientific and technical value, represents a significant innovation in the field of medical devices and aims at improving the planning of neurosurgical interventions, at the greater effectiveness of therapies with transcranial magnetic stimulation and could be a valid aid in research in neurology and neurophysiology.
